Jonathan, a tortoise, photographed in 1902 and still alive today, is 189 years old.

Jonathan, the giant tortoise, is 189 years old. He may not be as fast as he used to be, but he is still going strong. He could be the oldest tortoise or animal that lives on land in the world.

Jonathan may have been taken to the island of St. Helena in 1882. A picture of him from 1902 shows him at his full adult size. A giant tortoise can take up to 50 years to reach its full size so he might have been born in 1832.

Jonathan is probably the oldest animal on land that is still alive, but he isn't the oldest animal ever. Other tortoises have lived longer, and one unconfirmed tortoise in India may have lived as long as 250 years.
